{march fabulous finds} music we love

We're back with another of our favorites for the month of March. This time we're sharing some of our favorite tunes...
Steph: Hands down, this month I am completely in love with the new album by Andrew Bird 'Break It Yourself'. I've been a lover of Mr. Bird for a long time and this album certainly doesn't disappoint. Seriously, who doesn't love a man who can play multiple instruments at once and whistle?! Check out the new album here.

Cate: Love, love, love the song Crazy by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. You must listen to it here. Plus it doesn't hurt that she's completely adorable.

See you kids on Friday with some of our fave products for the month!

I ran across this on Swiss-miss yesterday and was blown away. A Typography Dating Game by Aura Seltzer. It's smart, quirky and beautifully crafted. Kinda genius.

and another fun site...

What a perfect day to stumble across this fun site! Shortly after posting our favorite sites/blogs for March in our Fabulous Finds, I discovered that one of my Etsy shop items (Blind Impression Note Cards) was featured on 'The Chalkboard'. This being my first time visiting The Chalkboard site, I had to poke around a bit. A few pages in and I'm completely hooked (and super excited to see they included our work as one of their favorite paper goods)! More fun sites to love - seriously, what did we ever do before the Internet?

{march fabulous finds} blogs/sites we love

Happy Monday friends! Cate and I are really excited about the new edition we are bringing to the blog this week. Once a month (during the last week of the month) we will be sharing a whole week of Fabulous Finds. This is an opportunity for us to document and share some of the amazing things we've stumbled across over the past month that we just couldn't live without. Some are graphically or type inspired, and others are just for the fun of it. Either way, it should be a good time!

We're going to kick of Monday with our favorite blogs/sites we've come across during March...

My favorite site this month by far is the Lost Type Co-op. Focused on getting beautiful type-faces out into the world, the foundry embraces a 'Pay-What-You-Want' method that allows the consumers to get their hands on some truly amazing fonts for little to no cost. It's awesome and definitely bookmark worthy!

My favorite blog this month is Elephantine. Written by a fellow Seattleite, the blog features clean and crisp photography. She portrays a creative perspective on a city I love. Completely inspiring!

We'll be back on Wednesday to share our favorite tunes for the month. See you then!

mad about mad men

It's Friday!! It's been a crazy week. We've worked hard, done some serious printing, took a photography class (more to come on that next week) and now we're ready to relax and celebrate the weekend. It may only be Friday but I'm already preparing for Sunday evening and the return of Mad Men. The beloved show is back with it's fifth season and we couldn't be more excited (scandals, fabulous clothing and vintage advertising...really, what's not to love?). However, to fully prepare, one must have their choice of cocktail ready. I asked The Man which he would recommend and he surprised me with a very simple, yet classic selection; The Classic Martini.

Although I once drank my martinis dirty with vodka, I now prescribe to the more traditional route (gin with a lemon twist, stirred, not shaken). Want to make your own on Sunday? Below is the recipe. We're thinking a few 60's style appetizers and fondue might be in order as well.

Whatever you have planned for this weekend, I hope it's lovely. See you all on Monday!

The Classic Martini
1 1/2 ounces gin, preferably Plymouth
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
1 dash orange bitters
Garnish: lemon twist

Combine the gin, vermouth and bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until chilled and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. Enjoy!

100 days of white

I stumbled across the blog Brand Spirit yesterday and I find the whole idea completely fascinating. If you've been to my house you know I have a slight obsession with white objects. I have a growing collection of white pottery, artwork, white animal objects (like this fantastic octopus), and white furniture (yes, I even have a white sofa...gasp!). So of course I would be completely intrigued by this project, if not by color choice alone. For 100 days, the blog will post photographs of typical household items painted white to remove their visual branding "reducing the object to its purest form". Such a cool concept...I'm tempted to send something for them to paint!

is it monday already?

In general, when one jumps on an airplane to head to a warmer climate, one would naturally assume it was for the purpose of rest and relaxation. Being that my trip to LA was actually for business reasons, I am back in the cooler climate of Seattle neither well rested, nor relaxed. Instead, I came home to a flurry of work to catch up on, and projects to tend to, all to be done over the weekend. Woe is me.

However, I also managed to squeeze in a little time at the Sounders game on Saturday, file my taxes, teach a letterpress class (more to come on that soon) and get in some quality time with my new iPad 3. All-in-all, it is now Monday and I am officially pooped. I am however having a glorious time day-dreaming about returning to a warmer climate where I can lay on a beach, drink an adult beverage, and become better acquainted with my new Apple friend.

Yesterday was a big day. I was handed the keys to my very own studio with a western view. During the 3.5 minutes I spent surveying my new spot, the sky collapsed with snow and I had to snap this shot. Happy Thursday everyone..

in LA

Back in the day, one of my college roommates and I had a thing for a particular movie soundtrack that featured this song. I obviously listened to that soundtrack one too many times, because as I walk the streets of Los Angeles, I can't get it out of my head! It's funny, I have always thought of cities as colors. When I think of Venice Italy I think of the color red, and when I think of Seattle I think of slate blue (obviously). But when I think of L.A., I hear music.

Paper Alphabet by Sonya Dyakova.
The alphabet sprung from wanting to highlight what makes sculpture different from other art forms. by cutting and folding a flat sheet of paper, a three-dimensional alphabet was devised. A considerable amount of effort went into crafting and arranging the letterforms, each one playfully varying in shape, the depth remaining constant. The legibility of the type is greatly influenced by the angle from which it is viewed. When viewed directly from above, the edges of the paper create outlines, making the letterforms easy to read.
Such a fascinating way to illustrate the uniqueness of each individual letterform. Beautiful.

monday, monday

How is it possibly Monday already? And better yet, how did I miss Friday's post altogether? Obviously too much time spent having fun and not enough time spent on the blog! (Ha! Don't I wish!) In all seriousness, it's safe to say this past week wasn't exactly spent lounging in the Seattle sun rain. Actually, it looked a little more like me hiding out in the Studio until the wee hours of the night. The shipment was officially sent out (all of you who placed an order from our Love(ly) Letters sale should be getting your items soon), Cate and I caught up on re-printing a lot (and I mean A LOT) of inventory we were running low on, I caught up on a few custom pieces in the works, and we even managed to get two of our more recent items posted in the Etsy shop. Altogether it was a successful week.

What's on the docket for this week? Well, sadly it's going to be rather quiet around these parts, as tomorrow I am catching a jet plane to Los Angeles. It's a quick trip (so quick in fact I'm not even planning on bringing my computer along), but I'll be back before Friday to wrap up the week and get you prepped for all the fun stuff we've got coming up next week! In the meantime, Ms. Cate will be here to keep you company.

fantastic fontstaches

There's been a lot of talk about facial hair in my house's facial hair to be more specific. The Man has a beard; he keeps it short and trim, and I absolutely love it. Sadly though, a week ago when Chloe was having a bout with a sour tummy, after a sleepless night and not enough attention paid to the state of the shield on the electric razor, the beard accidentally came off. It was funny, tragic, and shocking all at the same time. The good news is, a week later, the beard is back and The Man looks more like himself again. The bad news is, as the removal of the beard was obviously not a planned thing, we never got to talk about all the other facial hair options we might have, like a mustache. Personally, I think we're both a fan of the beard...but the type-themed images above certainly make you wonder. If you could rock a fontastche, which would you pick?

yellow + gray

Rumor has it that 'Tangerine Tango' is the hottest color of 2012. But, if you were to ask Dahlia Press...I think we'd probably argue that Yellow is where it's at, especially when it's paired with a soft gray. Seriously, what's not to love about this color combination?

friday facts

It's officially Friday, and it's officially of yesterday! So far 2012 has been a complete whirlwind. So much has happened in the past two months that it's hard to even keep track. So I thought I'd write a little list of fun facts that have come about in the last 60 days...
1. As of this post, we have one more blog post then we did in all of 2010 (not bad being that it's only March).
2. January and February have been our best Etsy sales to date!
3. We had our first sale on in February...which was an awesome success.
4. Cate joined the blogging team in January (and I couldn't be happier).
5. We complete revamped our blog look in January.
6. In February we gave the entire Dahlia Press website a massive overhaul...and couldn't love it more.
7. In February Dahlia Press became an Envelopments Dealer.
8. We finally got around to printing Valentines Day cards (but not sending them...maybe next year).
9. We introduced a few new wedding designs (and just you wait, we've got many more heading your way).
10. We tinkered with Wax Seals.
...and to think that's just a few of the awesome things we've been up to. Needless to say, I'm pretty proud of Dahlia Press, of Cate, and of myself. It's been a great year. Now, I'm off to try and relax and enjoy a weekend! Ciao!!
