I admit it, I am a complete gluten for the Academy Awards. I love the show, the celebrities, the musical numbers and of course, Billy Crystal; so there was absolutely no way I was going to miss last nights show. The Oscars have always been a huge part of my life, in fact, two of my Great Aunts used to work for the Academy and so when asked why I love this show oh so very much, I can easily answer that the Oscars are in my blood.
On a normal year (one where I am not filling orders for Fab.com and launching a new website) I make it a point to see as many nominated movies as possible. This occasionally means weekends filled with double-headers, but when faced with a deadline (especially one filled with popcorn and amazing flicks), I'm always game. Sadly this year, I was admittedly behind in my movie going. I was sad to not be able to support my argument for why "this movie should get that" and "that movie should get this" but I suppose this just means I have a few movie dates scheduled for the near future.
I did however pull out my collection of Academy Award Programs. Having relatives in 'the biz' has allowed me to collect some serious Oscar swag over the years (including a very 80's style jacket - think Michael Jackson's coat in the Thriller video, but black with a fully embroidered gold Oscar on the back. 'Wow' is right!). My favorite items are the programs though. I love to pour over the names of actors, directors and designers that have been nominated over the years, and the programs themselves are pretty amazing examples of design and typography of their time. Sadly it was rather late at night when I tried to photograph them, so the photos ended up being a little shoddy, but I had to share at least one. This is my oldest program, it's rather simple in design, but I absolutely love it. Such a great keepsake.
Did you watch the awards? And if so, which movies were you rooting for?
